چکیده

ORGANOHALOGEN COMPOUNDS – Volume 66 (2004) 2494 Introduction In January 2003 the European Commission launched the project "Dioxins & PCBs: Environmental Levels and Human Exposure in Candidate Countries". Major objective was the collection of available information on dioxin and PCB related issues in Accession and Candidate Countries (further referred to as AC/CC) in order to develop a overview on the current situation with respect to environmental contamination and related human exposure. Related legislation, enforcement measures, existing capacities and activities in the fields of research and monitoring were included into the evaluation. Aggregation, analysis and comparison of the collected information enabled to identify data and knowledge gaps, to assess the situation in AC/CC in comparison to earlier EU Member States (further referred to as MS) and to contribute to knowledge exchange and capacity building.

Dioxins and PCBs in feed and food--review from European perspective.

During the 1990s, a number of adverse contamination incidents focussed the attention of the media and the general public on food safety. This led to the evaluation of safety measures with regard to dioxin intake from food. Important aspects regarding dioxins and PCBs in the food chain are reviewed here, allowing a contextual understanding of the present situation through its chronological devel...

Risk-Based Consumption Advice for Farmed Atlantic and Wild Pacific Salmon Contaminated with Dioxins and Dioxin-like Compounds

We reported recently that several organic contaminants occurred at elevated concentrations in farmed Atlantic salmon compared with concentrations of the same contaminants in wild Pacific salmon [Hites et al. Science 303: 226-229 (2004)]. We also found that polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), toxaphene, dieldrin, dioxins, and polybrominated diphenyl ethers occurred at higher concentrations in Euro...

Effects of perinatal exposure to PCBs and dioxins on play behavior in Dutch children at school age.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and dioxins are known as neurotoxic compounds that may modulate sex steroid hormones. Steroid hormones play a mediating role in brain development and may influence behaviors that show sex differences, such as childhood play behavior. In this study we evaluated the effects of perinatal exposure to environmental levels of PCBs and dioxins on childhood play behavio...

Prenatal exposure to PCDDs/PCDFs and dioxin-like PCBs in relation to birth weight.

Several human studies have shown that low-level exposure to environmental contaminants, such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides, negatively influences birth outcomes. However, the effects of low-level exposure to polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), and dioxin-like PCBs (DL-PCBs) on birth outcomes have not been clarifie...

Immunologic effects of background exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls and dioxins in Dutch preschool children.

Prenatal exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and dioxins is associated with changes in the T-cell lymphocyte population in healthy Dutch infants. We investigated whether these changes persist into later childhood and whether background exposure to PCBs and dioxins is associated with the prevalence of infectious or allergic diseases and humoral immunity at preschool age. The total study...
